Germany’s female lugers reached the podium at the European Championships. However, an Austrian woman was faster.
Former world champion Julia Taubitz narrowly lost the duel with the Austrian Madeleine Egle again and took second place again at the Toboggan World Cup in Innsbruck. The 27-year-old was 0.024 seconds behind Egle after two runs in the race on Saturday on the Olympic track, which was also held as a European Championship.
“That’s okay, but it still annoys you a little,” said Taubitz. “It was a close race and in principle I’m happy with silver, but Madeleine is just incredibly strong here.”
Last weekend Taubitz had already been beaten by a narrow margin of 0.029 seconds in Winterberg. Third in Innsbruck, 0.239 seconds behind, was world champion Anna Berreiter from Berchtesgaden, who also won European Championship bronze behind European champion Egle and Taubitz.
Taubitz overall further ahead
“After last week, I didn’t think I had much of a chance,” said Berreiter. “Third place is a step in the right direction, the competition was fun and now we’re heading towards the World Championships. To do that you have to collect yourself again and then give it your all.”
With second place, Taubitz, who fell at the German championships in Altenberg at the end of last year and was ultimately handicapped, defended her lead in the overall World Cup ranking with 455 points. However, the three-time world champion’s lead over her pursuer Egle (415) shrank by 15 points.
