Wellinger, who came second behind the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi at the Four Hills Tournament, landed the longest jump of the day with 144.5 meters in the second round and set a hill record. Overall, the Slovenians were too strong.
It was the first of three super team competitions this winter. The format, which was introduced in the preseason, includes two jumpers instead of the usual four jumpers. The two athletes each jump three times. The format is controversial among athletes. The main criticism of Wellinger’s stars is that only half of the athletes per nation can compete. Super team competitions are also planned this winter in Lake Placid (USA) and at ski flying in Oberstdorf.
