Jan-Lennard Struff was the first German to reach the second round of the men’s event at the Australian Open. The 33-year-old from Warstein won in Melbourne after a tough fight against the Australian Rinky Hijikata 3:6, 6:3, 6:2, 6:7 (2:7), 7:6 (10:8).
Struff converted his second match point after 3:58 hours. The tennis professional is now facing the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
Daniel Altmaier, Yannick Hanfmann and Maximilian Marterer had previously lost their first round games. Alexander Zverev will contest his opening encounter this Tuesday (9 a.m./Eurosport) against Dominik Koepfer.
