Johannes Kühn finished third in the individual at the start of the World Cup dress rehearsal in Antholz, giving the German biathletes their eighth podium finish of the season.
The 32-year-old only made two mistakes in the shortened individual in difficult visibility conditions and was 1:44.0 minutes behind Norway’s superstar Johannes Thingnes Bö after 15 kilometers.
The overall World Cup leader remained error-free in his 72nd World Cup success and prevailed on Thursday with 1:36.1 minutes ahead of his brother Tarjei (2 errors). Thanks to the eighth-best running time, Kühn prevented the dominant Scandinavians from achieving their sixth triple success this winter. The Bavarian crossed the finish line 3.3 seconds ahead of Johannes Dale-Skjevdal.
Danilo Riethmüller (1 mistake), who replaced the ill Philipp Horn, celebrated a great World Cup debut. In seventh place, the 24-year-old broke the association’s internal World Cup standard. Opening winner Roman Rees finished tenth (2 errors). Benedikt Doll, Justus Strelow and Philipp Nawrath had nothing to do with the top positions after too many shooting errors.
