The NGO “Protect Our Winters” (POW) reacted mostly positively on Monday. This is “an important step towards credible climate protection,” said ÖSV racer Julian Schütter.
Overall, the sustainability strategy can be celebrated as a success, even if it is only a plan so far, the athlete emphasized in a broadcast. In February 2023, Schütter, with the support of POW, handed over an open letter from athletes to the FIS and significantly initiated the development. POW Austria managing director Moritz Nachtschatt told the APA that the FIS had agreed to “all of our demands”. They are optimistic and want to actively help the FIS – for example in the form of workshops – to implement the strategy.

According to its own information, the FIS sent out questionnaires to over 30 venues in all disciplines in order to be able to realistically extrapolate to all events. The new figures are intended to transparently determine where and how emissions can be specifically reduced. The world association said the demand to adapt the competition calendars of FIS sports in order to reduce the influence of travel is being implemented on an ongoing basis.
Greenpeace Austria was not yet convinced. In a press release, economic expert Ursula Bittner said the efforts were “a first step in the right direction.” However, how the individual goals are to be achieved in concrete terms “is still unclear”. The FIS “urgently needs to step up” especially when it comes to the racing calendar.
