Italy’s record goalscorer Gigi Riva dies at the age of 79

Riva is the record goalscorer in the Italian national team and became European champion with the Squadra Azzurra in 1968 and runner-up in the world championship in 1970. He led his Sardinian club Cagliari to their only championship title as top scorer in the 1969/70 season.

Riva was the star of Italian football in the 60s and 70s with Gianni Rivera. The powerful striker scored 35 goals and 164 hits in 42 international matches for Cagliari in the domestic league. Riva was top scorer in Serie A three times.

Riva was admitted to a hospital in Sardinia at the weekend and died on Monday evening.
