Ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin speaks out after her departure from the Tofana course. The World Cup continues without them for now. Winter is over for an Olympic champion.
Ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin is sitting out for the time being after falling on the first descent in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The American announced on social media that she would not be taking part in the other races of the World Cup weekend in the Dolomites or the giant slalom at Kronplatz next Tuesday.
The 28-year-old wrote that she was glad she wasn’t injured any worse. But it still seems too early to make further predictions. In a picture she posted, Shiffrin can be seen lying in a bed and cooling her left knee.
Shiffrin lost his balance after a bump while descending the Tofana route on Friday. She fell and crashed into the safety net. The US star was treated for several minutes and then limped off the slopes, partially supported by carers, his face contorted in pain. Shiffrin was then taken to a hospital in Cortina, Italy. According to the first impression, the cruciate ligaments were intact, the US association announced after the examinations there.
Shiffrin has already won the overall World Cup five times in her career and is confidently leading the rankings again this winter. The exceptional athlete from Colorado already has seven victories this season.
In addition to Shiffrin, several other riders fell on Friday, including Emma Aicher. The German suffered a bruised shoe edge and therefore also skipped the second downhill run on Saturday.
The season is over for Olympic champion Corinne Suter. The Swiss woman was injured while landing after a jump and stopped her run. The 29-year-old suffered a torn cruciate ligament and a meniscus injury in her left knee, her association announced.
