Werder Bremen moves away from the Bundesliga relegation zone. After the 1-0 win at Bayern Munich, the Hanseatic League also won against SC Freiburg. The Breisgauer series of successes against Bremen ends.
SV Werder Bremen has refined its perfect football week. Six days after the surprise win against German champions Bayern Munich, the Hanseatic League celebrated a 3-1 (1-1) win against SC Freiburg and picked up more points in the fight to stay in the Bundesliga.
The Breisgauer team failed to continue their winning streak against Werder and lost against Bremen for the first time since May 23, 2020. The defeat was also a setback for coach Christian Streich’s team in the race for a European Cup place.
Marvin Ducksch (9th minute) put the hosts in front with a penalty kick in front of 41,500 spectators in the sold-out Weserstadion. Before the break, Vincenzo Grifo (28th) also equalized for the guests with a penalty. In a strong second half, Bremen earned the victory with a 2-1 win from the outstanding Justin Njinmah (53′). Julian Malatini provided the emotional climax. The Argentinian newcomer scored the final score in stoppage time a few seconds after coming on as a substitute. Coach Ole Werner’s team has now been unbeaten in six games.
Weiser is missing injured
Bremen had to do without their Munich 1-0 winner Mitchell Weiser at short notice due to adductor problems. Olivier Deman joined the team for this. The hosts initially didn’t notice the loss of one of their most important players. Werder started confidently and combined skillfully a few times into the Freiburg penalty area.
Bremen were rewarded for their efforts early on. With a foul penalty converted based on video evidence, striker Ducksch, who returned after his yellow card suspension, put his team in the lead with his eighth goal of the season.
Werder didn’t take advantage of the momentum afterwards. A four-minute interruption due to the throwing of chocolate thalers in protest against the entry of an investor into the German Football League may have caused the Hanseatic League to lose its rhythm.
Njinmah poses problems for Freiburg’s defense
The Freiburg team found their way more and more into the game and pushed their opponents into their half. In the 19th minute, Bremen’s goalkeeper Michael Zetterer prevented the score from being 1-1 with a strong reaction to a header from Lucas Höler. To equalize, the Breisgauer team also needed a penalty kick, which Grifo converted. After that the game was absolutely even, but took place more between the penalty areas than in the penalty areas
After the break, Bremen continued their performance from the opening phase. Njinmah in particular could no longer get the Freiburg defense under control. Consequently, the 23-year-old scored his fourth goal of the season after a nice individual lead from 18 meters.
The Freiburgers couldn’t think of much else. The substitutions of new signings Attila Szalai and Florent Muslija also had no effect. Bremen delivered the highlights in the final phase: Leonardo Bittencourt saw that SC keeper Noah Atubolu was too far in front of his goal, shot from around 45 meters and only hit the crossbar. Malatini then shook the stadium with his debut goal.
