Owning a sports team was long the goal of the ultra-wealthy, but expanding it into an empire – with multiple teams in multiple leagues – is a winning strategy for creating generational wealth. Having a portfolio of teams allows the owner to cross-sell sponsorships, develop mixed-use real estate, and expand into new distribution channels more easily. A sports emporium can also relieve pressure on a single team, acting as a hedge for the rebuilding years.
The list of the “Most Valuable Sports Empires in the World in 2024” is led by Liberty Media, the group that owns Formula 1, and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, owner of Arsenal, Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggetsamong other teams.
According to the list of Forbes, business value Together, the 25 most valuable sports empires exceed US$215 billion. and this figure represents an increase of 24% compared to the previous year. According to the makers of the classification, the main reason for the increase is that the values of the teams in the American leagues – MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL – increased their value by almost 30% in the last 12 months.
The added value of the shares of liberty in its sports assets fell 12%, up to US$18,220 million, but it is still at the top of our list. Liberty’s value decreased last year because it was divested from the Atlanta Braves in July (current company value: $2.6 billion).
The biggest winner on this year’s empire list is Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, up 155% from last year to $11.9 billion, thanks primarily to Josh Harris’ purchase of the Washington Commanders in July passed for a record of US$6,050 million.
