The defending champions in the National Football League beat the Baltimore Ravens 17:10 in the AFC final on Sunday. Opponents in the final on February 11th in Las Vegas are the 49ers, who turned a 17-point deficit against the Detroit Lions in the second half on Sunday evening (local time) and won 34:31.
Kelce set a record
Travis Kelce set a record in the Chiefs’ victory. The tight end, whose girlfriend, pop superstar Taylor Swift, was in the stands at the stadium, has now caught the most passes in playoff games. The previous record holder was Jerry Rice, who spent the longest and most successful time of his career with the 49ers. Kelce surpassed his mark of 151 passes received midway through the second quarter.
Lions: Strong season with an unfortunate ending
A strong season ended in dramatic fashion for the Lions. In California, the Lions dominated the first half, the hosts seemed at a loss. But the Lions lost the thread in the third quarter. Josh Reynolds dropped good passes twice. Probably the decisive scene of the game was a long pass from 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy immediately before the second touchdown. Lions defenseman Kindle Vildor almost intercepted the pass but hit his helmet. From there it jumped into the air and Brandon Aiyuk caught it 51 yards short of the end zone.
This will be a repeat of the Super Bowl from four years ago. In Miami, the Chiefs prevailed 31:20 and won their first title with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl two more times since then and won the title again a year ago in Phoenix. For the 49ers it is the first participation since the loss against Kansas City and the first with Purdy as quarterback.
