Germany’s handball players are disappointed after missing out on a medal. The European Championships showed what the team still has to work on.
Captain Johannes Golla sees Germany’s handball players developing in the right direction despite missing out on a European Championship medal.
“We have taken a huge step forward in defense. With new players in the squad, we have been given new options that can be very valuable in the future. That was a step forward,” said the 26-year-old after fourth place the home European Championship.
With the 31:34 in the small final against Sweden, the DHB selection narrowly missed out on their first medal at a major tournament since Olympic bronze in 2016. National coach Alfred Gislason’s team held up well in the tournament against top teams such as France, Denmark and Sweden, but in the end they left the floor as losers.
“This European Championship gives us confidence that we can do it. But it also brings with it the warning that we have to reach the absolute limit in order to keep up with the top teams,” said Golla and added: “We have to be over 60 Just play more consistently for minutes.”
Handball players still have to qualify for the Olympics
Teammate Juri Knorr also spoke of a step forward overall. At the same time, the playmaker demanded: “We have to get better so that we can consistently get to the semi-finals. But it won’t be a sure-fire success.”
After missing the direct ticket, Germany’s handball players have to qualify for the Olympics through the qualification tournament in March. In a group of four, the DHB team meets Algeria, Austria and Croatia and has to come at least second. “It’s doable. It’s realistic that we can progress,” said young star Renars Uscins.
