In the sprint sector, the talent had already made people sit up and take notice with twelfth place in the World Cup. But since the competitions at the start of the season in Finland, nothing has been working for the 24-year-old. Lack of strength, constant tiredness and hardly any drive. Since then, Mrkonjic has had to slow down. Doctors diagnosed him with chronic fatigue syndrome.
“I trained too much and slipped into overtraining,” the Fuschler recently explained to the “SALZBURG24” website. A viral illness in December could have been the possible trigger for his two-month break. “I had Pfeiffer’s glandular fever in 2018. It stays in the body and if you are too weak, it comes back.” A comeback this year is unlikely. Mrkonjic wants to take his time recovering, but is combative in an Instagram post: “I don’t know when, but I will be back!”
