On December 10, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Chess Federation Dmitry Peskov commented on the defeat of the Russian chess player Ian Nepomniachtchi in the match for the world chess crown against the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen.
“Nepomniachtchi is a brilliant chess player. But he was weaker, ”said a Kremlin spokesman.
Carlsen’s victory became known earlier that day. As a result of 11 games, he beat Nepomniachtchi with a score of 7.5: 3.5 with black pieces. The Norwegian defended his world title ahead of schedule.
The prize fund of the match for the title of world champion was € 2 million. Carlsen will receive € 1.2 million, Nepomniachtchi – € 800 thousand.
Carlsen, 31, is ranked first in the FIDE ranking. He has held the title of world champion since 2013, when he beat the representative of India, Viswanathan Anand.
Nepomniachtchi is 31 years old, in the FIDE rating he is on the fifth line. The Russian became the European champion in 2010, won the World Team Championship twice (2013, 2019) as part of the Russian national team, and won the Candidates Tournament in 2021.
On November 24, Carlsen noted his opponent’s aggressive style of play. According to him, Nepomniachtchi plays faster and understands the value of keeping the king better than his previous opponents.
