The Wagner brothers are celebrating a surprise success in the NBA. Of the other world champions, Dennis Schröder loses, while Daniel Theis can also celebrate.
In the North American professional basketball league NBA, the Orlando Magic have made an exclamation mark with the German world champions Franz and Moritz Wagner. Despite a temporary 17-point deficit, Jamahl Mosley’s team defeated the Western Conference leaders, the Minnesota Timberwolves, 108:106.
The Magic laid the foundation for revenge after the blowout in January in the final quarter, in which they only allowed 18 points. Offensively, five players scored in double figures – including the young stars Franz Wagner, who put up 19 points, and Paolo Banchero (23). Moritz Wagner scored eight points in just under eleven minutes of playing time. On the Timberwolves side, superstar Anthony Edwards scored 22 points before the shooting guard had to leave the field injured four minutes before the end of the game. With its second win in a row, Orlando is still on course for the playoffs – tied with Miami – in eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
Westbrook cracks the 25,000 point mark
The Los Angeles Clippers (third place) play an even better role in the Western Conference. With offensive fireworks, Daniel Theis’ team defeated the Detroit Pistons 136:125. After defensive weaknesses at the start of the game, the Clippers turned things up and scored 109 points in the last three quarters. LA was able to rely on Kawhi Leonard (33 points) and Russell Westbrook, who became only the 25th player in NBA history to break the 25,000-point mark with his 23 points. The German world champion Theis put up five points, three rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes of playing time.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Raptors around World Championship MVP Dennis Schröder lost for the sixth time in the last seven games. In the 106:135 defeat against the Houston Rockets, coach Ime Udoka left his starting line-up on the bench for the entire fourth quarter due to a 30-point lead.
The reason for this was, among other things, the strong performance of rookie Cam Whitmore (25 points) and center Alperen Sengun, who put up 24 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Schröder scored eight points in 22 minutes of playing time from the bench and did not hit any of his five three-point shots.
Due to the series of defeats, the Raptors, in twelfth place in the Eastern Conference, are gradually losing touch with the playoff places.
