With a start record and best time in the second run, Lisa Buckwitz raced to her first European Championship title in the monobob.
Lisa Buckwitz from BRC Thuringia also won the European Monobob Championship title in Sigulda, Latvia with her World Cup victory. After two runs, the 29-year-old third place in the World Championships prevailed with a lead of 0.27 seconds over the Romanian Andreea Grecu. In the second round she set a start record of 5.55 seconds.
World champion Laura Nolte from BSC Winterberg came third, sharing third place in the World Cup with the American Elana Meyers Taylor. Maureen Zimmer from BSC Sachsen Oberbärenburg came sixth in the World Cup and came fourth in the European Championships that were held at the same time.
“The starting record was my goal, it worked. Now I’ve won here, I wouldn’t have thought that,” said Buckwitz, who extended her lead in the overall World Cup with her fourth win of the season. Nolte, on the other hand, struggled with the sled’s technology: “My brakes were grinding a bit in the entrances and exits of the curves, of course that shouldn’t happen. But it’s better that it happened now than at the World Cup.” The World Championships will take place on their home track in Winterberg from February 19th.
