Douglas Costa returned to Gremio in May with great euphoria. Now there is a falling out with the club and the relegation is on the books.
Former Bayern star Douglas Costa is currently making negative headlines in Brazil – mainly because of his behavior in the course of the surprising relegation with Gremio Porto Alegre.
Before the last and decisive league game against champions Atletico Mineiro on Friday, Costa had asked the club to travel to a classy hotel in Rio de Janeiro, over 1,000 kilometers from Porto Alegre, for his wedding celebration. When Gremio refused him the trip, he deleted all pictures in his club’s jersey from his Instagram profile.
In the 4-3 win over Atletico Mineiro, Costa even contributed a goal, but already sent farewell greetings to the fans when he was cheering. In addition, the victory was not enough to leave the relegation ranks – and Gremio, 2017 Copa Libertadores winner, must sensationally move into the 2nd division.
After relegation: is Douglas Costa leaving Gremio early?
Costa’s behavior is all the more accused of the offensive player, as he once celebrated his breakthrough at the traditional club and on his return repeatedly emphasized how much Gremio meant to him. In terms of sport, however, he was rarely able to convince, with the 31-year-old only getting three goals and two assists in 26 league games.
Originally, Costa was loaned to Gremio by his parent club Juventus Turin until the end of June next year. After relegation, however, he should move again in January and could return to Juve early. In Turin he is still under contract until 2023.
