Ski jumper Andreas Wellinger won the second World Cup competition in Willingen. With jumps of 139 and 149 meters, the 28-year-old from Oberstdorf flew to victory in adverse conditions.
As on the previous day, the Four Hills Tournament winner Ryoyu Kobayashi from Japan came second ahead of the Swiss Gregor Deschwanden. After no German jumper was able to place in the top ten on Saturday, Wellinger had to come off the beam twice before his final jump because of the wind. But he kept his nerve and made up six places with a long jump.
Since the constant rain affected the inrun track at the Mühlenkopfschanze and the wind kept changing, the staging of the second round was even in jeopardy.
Wellinger gains points on strength
Stephan Leyhe (11th), Pius Paschke (25th) and Philipp Raimund (26th) fell a few places back in the second round. Like the day before, Karl Geiger (31st) and Felix Hoffmann (36th) missed the final of the best 30 jumpers. With his victory, Wellinger, currently second in the overall World Cup, gained important points on the Austrian leader Stefan Kraft, who only finished sixth.
The Slovenian Timi Zajc showed the longest jump of the day with 153 meters. Last year he fell 161.5 meters after landing in the same place after a flight. After the first round, the Pole Aleksander Zniszczol was surprisingly in the lead. However, he fell back to seventh place after the second jump.
