Sturm’s successful manager Andreas Schicker is said to have aroused the interest of German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen. Sturm’s sports director is considered a key figure in Graz and, according to the “Bild” newspaper, has been very popular with Werder for a long time. “Such rumors are an award for the path we have taken. They existed on the player and coach side, now they are around me,” said Schicker to the APA – Austria Press Agency.
The 37-year-old asked that he didn’t want to say much more given Friday’s top game against Salzburg. “It’s not something I’m dealing with immediately, I’m concentrating on the hugely important game on Friday.” Schicker did not want to answer whether he was already in contact with those responsible at Werder. According to media reports, Bremen wants to have the personnel clarified by the end of the month, as Frank Baumann is retiring from his position as sports director at the current ninth-place team on July 1st.
Schicker is considered the architect of the successful storm team under Christian Ilzer. The ex-professional is considered a forward-looking squad planner; he also handled the first player sales at Sturm for a sum in the double-digit million range. Schicker said last summer that a commitment to Germany would definitely appeal to him. “In the long term, my goal is to work for a club in the German Bundesliga,” he said at the time. “I want to get the most out of my career as a manager and I don’t think anyone would hold it against me if I left Sturm at some point.” After Christoph Freund (FC Bayern), a second Austrian could end up as sports director in the German Bundesliga.
