After her gold medal at the World Championships in Doha, Angelina Köhler is also thinking about her homeland. The teammates cheer with her. Now the 23-year-old is looking forward to a few days without competition.
Swimming world champion Angelina Köhler also used the greatest success of her career to date to declare her love for her homeland and her training group.
“It means a lot to me that someone is finally winning a medal in sprinting again in Germany – especially for Berlin. Berlin is my home. I love Berlin more than anything,” said the 23-year-old after winning gold in the 100 meter butterfly at the World Championships. “It means a lot to me that I can win gold again for Berlin, gold for Germany. It’s been a dream since I was a child.”
Praise from Märtens
On Monday evening in Doha, Köhler became the first German pool swimmer to win a gold medal at a World Championships since Britta Steffen in 2009. She is happy to show that Germany can be successful in swimming and that her base in the capital is strong. “We can do something,” said Köhler.
National teammate Lukas Märtens was also happy for her. “That’s terrific. The girl is incredible,” said the 22-year-old from Magdeburg, who is in the final of the 200 meter freestyle this Tuesday. Märtens highlighted Köhler’s fine character and said: “She is a huge athlete and now she has rewarded herself for it.”
Köhler’s motto: “Have fun”
Köhler herself wants to enjoy a few days without swimming races after her big World Cup triumph. “Now I don’t have any competitions for three days. I have to realize everything first – and then mobilize everything for the 50s,” she said, with a view to the preliminary run over half the distance on Friday.
When asked what her already outstanding form means for the summer with the Olympic Games in Paris, she said: “I’m not thinking that far yet – always think step by step.” Their motto: “Have fun, enjoy: that’s all that matters.”
