Austria’s single mixed relay with Lisa Hauser and Simon Eder was one of the favorites at the Biathlon World Championships in Nove Mesto on Thursday after several World Cup podium places in recent years, but the greatest domestic hopes for a medal in this year’s title fights were fulfilled not. In the end it was only ninth place, while France’s duo of Lou Jeanmonnot and Quentin Fillon Maillet celebrated victory in a dominant manner.
Even on Hauser’s first lap, his chances of a top spot were gone. The Tyrolean, who was in poor shape this year and was also slowed down by a cold before the World Cup, missed four times and lost a lot of time. “The top six was the goal, we are of course disappointed,” said the 41-year-old veteran Eder, who had to blame himself for his running and shooting range without making a single mistake.
The race turned into a big thriller in the finale. While the Norwegian Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold had to go into the penalty loop after the last shooting and in the end even Italy’s Lisa Vittozzi passed her for silver, Jeanmonnot closed the bag at the front with strong nerves. Fourth place went to Sweden, ahead of Switzerland and Germany.
