As expected, the country’s football association separated from the support staff surrounding head coach Jürgen Klinsmann and thus also from the 55-year-old Viennese. “Thank you Korea – it was short, very educational and still very nice!!! All the best!” wrote Herzog on Instagram.

The unfulfilled expectations proved fatal to his boss Klinsmann, who had made it his mission to win the Asian Cup. According to association president Chung Mong-gyu, the German also lacked the ability to lead the team. Klinsmann was exposed to some heavy criticism from commentators and fans in South Korea after his exit in the semi-finals of the continental championship last week.

The South Koreans lost 2-0 to outsiders Jordan at the finals in Qatar after a poor performance and didn’t shoot at the opponent’s goal once. In South Korea, football fans later unfurled a large banner in front of the association building calling for the team boss to be fired.

Klinsmann was criticized in South Korea even before the Asian Cup. The 1990 World Cup winner didn’t win any of his first five games with the Taeguk Warriors. The fact that he spent more time abroad than in South Korea was also not welcomed. The fact that the qualifying debut for the 2026 World Cup went well with two wins over China and Singapore was apparently not enough.

At the beginning of March 2023, Herzog was hired as a “co” by Klinsmann, whom he assisted with the US national team from 2012 to 2016. From 2018 to 2020, Herzog served as Israel’s team manager, and in 2021/22 he was relegated from the Bundesliga as head coach of Admira.
