World Triathlon imposed sanctions against the Russian Triathlon Federation

The International Triathlon Union (World Triathlon) has imposed sanctions against the Russian Triathlon Federation (RTR) “in connection with numerous violations of anti-doping rules by Russian athletes.” This was announced on December 13 by the press service of World Triathlon.

It is noted that the sanctions will be in effect for one year, the International Triathlon Union will check the implementation of its requirements on a quarterly basis.

RTR officials must resign from their positions in any World Triathlon and European Triathlon Union organizations for a period of one year. The FTR will not be able to host any world or European competitions until the end of 2022. In addition, the FTR is required to return all prize money earned by athletes who violate anti-doping rules, as well as reimburse all costs associated with these violations.

In addition, the RTR must reach an agreement with the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) on testing all Russian athletes, especially those triathletes who will perform at the international level. The FTR will develop a training plan for Russian athletes and coaches on doping issues and will be required to sanction any coach or official involved in anti-doping rule violations.

Earlier, on August 13, the acting Director General of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) Mikhail Bukhanov said that the case with a possible violation of anti-doping rules by traitlon player Igor Polyansky is outside the jurisdiction of his organization. He explained that the doping test was taken by the International Triathlon Union. However, if the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) makes a request to RUSADA, it will answer them. According to him, the situation with Polyansky is an isolated case, this is not a confirmation that sports in Russia have not changed. On the contrary, Bukhanov continued, the system of anti-doping work has changed in the country, and doping cases are also being detected.

At the same time, the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin spoke about the situation. He called her “more than alarming.” As the head of the department emphasized, if the violation of anti-doping rules is confirmed, “the most severe measures will be taken,” wrote “Sport-Express”.

The fact that doping testing of a participant in the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo Polyansky showed a positive result became known earlier in the day. The sample was taken from a Russian athlete on July 21 – during the out-of-competition stage in Vladivostok.
