Futsal: Friendship instead of rivalry at the Linz derby

Not only Upper Austria’s Bundesliga soccer teams LASK and Blau-Weiß Linz regularly fill the stadiums, the masses in the first Austrian futsal league also stream into the hall on Sunday: The Linz derby between FC Diamant Linz and FC Ljuti Krajisnici will take place in the Kleinmünchen Sports Secondary School (1 p.m.) 1200 fans expected.

In the last game before the championship play-offs, there is still a lot at stake for both teams: The home side want to finish the main round first in order to have home advantage in the first semi-final – for the Ljuti kickers only a win counts to finish fourth also move quickly into the final phase.

Despite the sporting rivalry, both clubs maintain a close friendship. “The friendship will be on hold for tomorrow’s game, but otherwise we’ll almost always be there at their home games,” says Diamant sports director Sanid Salai, whose team not only defends the title in the Austrian upper house, but also qualified for the group stage of the Futsal Champions. League wants to qualify.

Kickers from the Upper Austrian lower house are also helping both teams in the fight for the derby victory: kickers from Donau Linz like Edwin Skrgic and Matej Vidovic play on the diamond side. The guests will include opponents from local rivals Edelweiss Linz such as Kenan Ramic and Saldin Pezic on the floor.
