The home team had played their kick-off backwards, BW goalie Nicolas Schmid was supposed to immediately hit the ball to the top. However, the referee team around Alan Kijas did not recognize the violation of the rules, and at the same time the VAR was not allowed to correct it. The background: In controversial situations, the video referee should always only trace the respective action back to the relevant ball capture. Seen in this way, Ratkov’s early start played no role for the VAR, as the ball was only captured at the time when Schmid Ratkov shot. In addition, there is no provision for intervention in a kick-off situation in the VAR protocol. It remained the goal for the history books – even if it shouldn’t have counted.
