The first title of the season is duly celebrated by the Bayern basketball players. But the Munich team doesn’t want to be satisfied with winning the cup. The coach is still relieved at first.
After winning his first title in Germany, Bayern’s star coach Pablo Laso was mostly relieved. “Well, I can tell my family that I have fulfilled the task,” said the Spaniard with a smile after the cup victory in his home BMW Park. In the final, the Munich team prevailed against the German champions ratiopharm Ulm with 81:65.
Laso had reported in the run-up to the Top Four that his family expected nothing other than the title from him. “You have to win the cup,” his relatives told him. In particular, the youngest of his three sons, Aksel, who plays in Munich’s U19 team, put pressure on his father, who had won 22 titles with Real Madrid.
And Laso didn’t let his team down. After the clear victory in the semi-final against Bamberg, Bayern also performed dominantly in the final against Ulm. “It feels very good. It was a great weekend. The team really impressed today,” said Bayern managing director Marko Pesic.
“Of course we still have a lot to do this season”
But the cup title is said to have only been the beginning for Bayern. In the Euroleague, the star ensemble from der Isar is still aiming for the playoffs. And especially in the Bundesliga, after four years without a title, we should finally be able to win the championship again. “Of course we still have a lot to do this season,” said world champion Andreas Obst.
Before the league continues with a home game against BG Göttingen on February 28th, Bayern first celebrated defending their title in the cup. The champagne was already splashing in the cabin and then we continued on into the city. “I hope it will be intense and long,” announced Elias Harris.
