Andreas Brehme, the World Cup winning goalscorer in Rome, died suddenly of a cardiac arrest at the age of 63. The Hamburg native was a world-class defender who was particularly known for his hard and precise shot with both feet. In the 1990 World Cup final in the Roman Olympic Stadium, he converted the decisive penalty to make it 1-0.
His career began at 1. FC Saarbrücken before moving to 1. FC Kaiserslautern for many years. From there the path led him back to the Lauterern team via FC Bayern, Inter Milan and Real Zaragoza. With the Palatinate, Brehme achieved another miracle after being promoted straight back to the Bundesliga: Lautern was the only promoted team to date to win the championship title under coach Otto Rehhagel. After his active career, the 86-time national player tried his hand at coaching, but failed.
