All 23 players are ready to play. National coach Horst Hrubesch is optimistic about the difficult Olympic qualification with a great chance against France.
Horst Hrubesch set off for Lyon with the German footballers with very positive impressions from the training. “You could tell they were looking forward to it. I think three or four months ago nobody would have believed that we would be where we are now,” said the interim national coach before the Olympic qualification.
He himself is always positive anyway. “But I think the girls are too. We believe in our opportunity. I really hope we take advantage of it.”
The German women’s national team can book their ticket for the games in Paris (July 26th to August 11th) with a win in the Nations League semi-final against France this Friday (9 p.m./ARD). Since the French are automatically qualified as Olympic hosts, the German national team would get a second chance in the game for third place in the event of a defeat. Then the loser of the game between the world champions from Spain and the Netherlands would be the opponent next Wednesday in Seville or Heerenveen.
A good six months after the World Cup preliminary round exit in Australia, participation in the Olympics would be extremely important for the German Football Association. “Now we still have the chance to decide for ourselves,” said Hrubesch, who has all 23 players available against the third in the FIFA world rankings. “I believe that we will see a game that is on par against France in Lyon.”
