The series champion’s supervisory board unanimously decided to appoint the 50-year-old at its meeting on Monday evening in less than an hour.
“We are convinced that he will successfully shape and shape the future of this club,” said President Herbert Hainer. Eberl starts working at his youth club on March 1st. He signed a contract for more than three years until the summer of 2027.
Eberl was the dream solution for Bayern
The long-time Mönchengladbach manager, who most recently worked for Leipzig, has long been considered Bayern’s ideal solution. “The job as sports director is a big challenge that I will approach with a lot of respect and humility, but with even more anticipation,” Eberl was quoted as saying. “I want to do everything I can with everyone here to ensure that FC Bayern continues to be successful in the future and bring joy to its fans.”
The Munich team will introduce their new sports director on Tuesday (11 a.m.) at a press conference in the Allianz Arena. The native of Lower Bavaria will then also be asked about details about his move from Leipzig to Munich. FCB will pay a transfer fee, and according to dpa information, RB should be able to book a total of 4.5 million euros. Leipzig parted ways with Eberl at the end of September shortly before the top game against FC Bayern. From the RB bosses’ point of view, the reason was Eberl’s lack of commitment to Leipzig.
“Something special for me”
“I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it is special for me to now return to the club where it all began in a new role,” said the manager. Eberl played for the amateurs of FC Bayern in the early 1990s and also made a professional appearance for the Munich team.
Eberl’s commitment had become apparent. This has long been very popular with Honorary President Uli Hoeneß. Last year, Hoeneß also emphasized that “for the next six to twelve months we will have the staffing that the future should have.”
The Austrian Christoph Freund, who was signed by RB Salzburg in September, acts as the Munich team’s sports director. “A very experienced man, a good guy. If that’s the case, I’m looking forward to working with him,” said Freund when asked about Eberl after the 2-1 win against Leipzig last Saturday. We will “work well together as a team”.
Eberl required in the search for a trainer
Eberl, from whose “decades of experience in football management” (Hainer) Bayern want to benefit, will be particularly challenged as sports director when it comes to hiring a new coach. At the end of the season, the German series champions will part ways with coach Thomas Tuchel.
In addition, the experienced Bundesliga official will also have to bring about a change in the team, which has often disappointed this season, failed early in the DFB Cup and only has a minimal chance of defending its title in the championship.
Post vacant since Salihamidzic
Eberl’s commitment is a central aspect for the Munich-based company in the reorganization of the management team. The renovation became necessary after the club parted ways with CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic at the end of May last year. Kahn’s position was taken over by long-time finance chief Jan-Christian Dreesen, while Salihamidzic’s position remained vacant until now. “More competence and quality in management” can basically only do good, said Dreesen on Saturday.
However, the board’s personnel will actually be reduced in size in the summer. In addition to CEO Dreesen, Michael Diederich as his deputy and responsible for finance and sales and Eberl as sports director make up the management team of FC Bayern München AG. The current marketing director Andreas Jung is leaving the club on June 30th at his own request.
