THW Kiel is in the quarter-finals of the Handball Champions League ahead of schedule. The German record champions defeated the Hungarian representatives Pick Szeged 28:27 (16:14) on the penultimate group game day. With 20:6 points, coach Filip Jicha’s team has secured one of the top two places in Group A and will therefore skip the playoff round. The best throwers of the game were Eric Johansson from Kiel and Mario Sostaric for Szeged with eight hits each.
In the loud pick arena, the Kiel team got into the game well. Johansson in particular scored important goals. In the 19th minute the Swede scored 12:8 for THW, two more goals from the backcourt player made it 13:11 (24th) and 14:11 (25th). But Szeged always found the connection. At 16:16 (35th) the Hungarians equalized.
From then on, the two teams played a game on equal terms, in which the North Germans repeatedly scored but were unable to pull away. Szeged benefited primarily from the numerous saves made by its goalkeeper Roland Mikler. So the tide turned and the Kiel team had to chase a narrow deficit in the final phase. With a strong defensive performance, the THW laid the foundation for early qualification for the quarter-finals.
