The women’s national team is allowed to plan for the Olympics. Before that there are still important games for the Hrubesch selection – and a far-reaching sports policy decision.
After the 2-0 win in the Netherlands and the successful Olympic qualification, things continue to progress quickly for the German footballers.
The national team around captain Alexandra Popp will start qualifying for the 2025 European Championships in Switzerland in April. It should be clarified beforehand who will be the successor to interim national coach Horst Hrubesch after the summer games. Most important key points for the rest of the football year:
Coach question
The Paris Ticket gave the German Football Association a reprieve. As agreed, Hrubesch is responsible for the selection at the Olympic Games and then retires – at the age of 73 – to concentrate on his job as youth manager at Hamburger SV. Nevertheless, sports director Nia Künzer said in the evening in Heerenveen: “We will communicate promptly how things will continue.” There is no clear favorite to succeed Hrubesch.
European Championship qualification for Switzerland 2025
The groups will be drawn next Tuesday. The group first and second will take part directly in the tournament. The remaining places will be awarded in two playoff rounds in the fall with two legs. There are six match days from the beginning of April to mid-July. There are only nine days between the last European Championship qualifying game and the start of the Olympic football tournament.
Olympic games
The draw for the three groups with a total of twelve participants will take place on March 20th. In addition to France as the host team, world champions Spain and Germany as Europeans, the USA, Canada, Colombia and Brazil will be at the Summer Games (July 26th to August 11th). The games are played in Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice and Saint-Étienne. The grand finale comes at the end of the games in the Parc des Princes in Paris.
World Cup award
The awarding of the 2027 World Cup on May 17th is independent of the DFB women’s schedule, but is extremely important for the association. The FIFA Congress in Bangkok/Thailand decides on the host. The DFB is applying together with Belgium and the Netherlands. The German side is scheduled to play in Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Cologne. Tough competitors are the USA/Mexico and Brazil.
