EM 2021: This is how Germany gets into the EM round of 16

Germany got the curve just in time. After the win against Portugal, the DFB-Elf has the entry into the knockout round in their own hands. The arithmetic games in group F at a glance.

The swan song had already been formulated. Not only on this EM squad, but also on Joachim Löw as national coach. But that was premature, as the 4-2 win against European champions Portugal impressively demonstrated. Now the team can make it into the European Championship round of 16 against Hungary on Wednesday in Munich – but also gamble everything away.

What happens in which case?

Germany wins against Hungary

The move into the round of 16 is safe. If France and Portugal draw in the second game, Germany would even be group winners. That would be the case if Portugal won. Both teams would then have six points, but Germany won the direct comparison (4: 2). If France wins against Portugal, the Germans move into second place in the group of sixteen.

Germany draws against Hungary

In this case, Jogi Löw’s team would have to hope that Portugal would not win against France. Then you would move into the second round in second place. If Portugal wins, Germany would automatically be third in the group, as the direct comparison with the French, who would then also have four points, was lost (0: 1). Then the DFB team would have to hope to become one of the four best thirds in the group. With four points and a goal difference of plus 1, the prospects would be good.

Germany loses against Hungary

That should mean the preliminary round, although even then there is still a small chance of advancing. Namely when France defeated Portugal and the DFB selection would be third in the group thanks to the victory against Portugal. But then only with three points and therefore with poor prospects of being among the four best third in the group. If Portugal wins against France or both draws, Germany is eliminated from fourth in the group after a defeat against Hungary.
