After qualifying for the Olympics, the women’s national team’s focus is now on qualifying for the 2025 European Championships. Hrubesch’s selection probably has the easiest group.
The German footballers got lucky in qualifying for the 2025 European Championships in Switzerland. Interim national coach Horst Hrubesch’s team will play in Group 4 against Austria, Iceland and Poland. This was the result of the UEFA draw in Nyon/Switzerland. “We can be very satisfied with the tickets,” said Hrubesch in a DFB statement.
The DFB women were spared opponents from European champions and runner-up world champions England as well as the traditionally strong Swedes and Danes. There are six match days between April and July – before the German national team competes at the Olympic Games in Paris (July 26th to August 11th).
In addition to the host team from Switzerland, the two best teams in each group in League A will qualify for the European Championship finals from July 2nd to 27th, 2025. League affiliation was determined by the Nations League. The remaining seven European Championship places will be decided by two playoff rounds in the fall.
The world champions from Spain will face Denmark, Belgium and the Czech Republic in Group 2. England, France, Sweden and Ireland meet in what is probably the strongest Group 3. The Netherlands, Italy, Norway and Finland play in Group 1.
Good memories of two opponents
The German women beat the Austrians 2-0 in the quarterfinals at the European Championships in England in 2022. The Hruebsch team won twice against Iceland in the Nations League last year. “We want to apply the same standards to our performance as we did against the Netherlands last time,” said the 72-year-old, referring to last week’s 2-0 win in Heerenveen, when captain Alexandra Popp and Co. completed their participation in the Olympics.
The DFB team is a record European champion with eight titles and only lost to the hosts in the final of the 2022 European Championships in England. After the botched 2023 World Cup in Australia, German footballers first have to prove themselves internationally again. The opponents for the Olympics will be drawn on March 20th in Paris.
