Lazio Rome: Fascist ultras threaten newcomer Elseid Hysaj

On his debut at Lazio Roma, full-back Elseid Hysaj sang the song “Bella Ciao” – and thus drew the anger of the far-right ultras.

An openly right-wing ultra group of the Italian first division soccer club Lazio Rom has insulted and threatened new signing Elseid Hysaj from SSC Napoli. The reason: The 27-year-old Albanian had sung “Bella Ciao” at his debut – a song that is considered the hymn in Italy in the resistance against the former dictator Benito Mussolini. Several media had reported about it.

According to media reports, Hysaj faced an initiation ritual in the training camp, in which newcomers had to perform a song of their choice in front of the assembled team. Teammate Luis Alberto filmed the vocal performance of his new teammate and posted it on his social media channels. The video has since been deleted.

“Historically always right-wing extremist”

However, the video angered a fan group who openly professed fascism. However, it was not just online hateful comments. According to reports, the ultras tried to arrest Hysaj in front of the team hotel. According to the “kicker”, a banner with the inscription: “Hysaj is a worm, Lazio is fascist” appeared on a bridge in Rome on Monday evening.

The Italian news agency Adnkronos quoted one of those responsible: “Historically, our fans have always been right-wing extremists, and I say that with pride.” The fact that a player sang the “Bella Ciao” he described as “completely crazy”.

Lazio strongly condemned the behavior of the fascist ultras and declared that they would not be intimidated by such actions in the future either.
