Before the third of a maximum of seven quarter-final duels in the ICE Hockey League between the reigning champion Red Bull Salzburg and the Steinbach Black Wings takes place today (7:15 p.m., live ticker on nachrichten.at) with the score at 1:1, there was already good news from the offspring. The U20 team from the Upper Austria Academy sensationally reached the final of the international championship. Namely against their higher-ranked peers from the “Red Bulls” stable. Above all, the manner was impressive. Coach John Bierchen’s team turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 win in the best-of-5 series.

The showdown at the Liefering Academy was tough: The boys from Linz were down 3-0 in the deciding match until the 38th minute, before Theodor Fichtinger (38th), Johannes Aigner (42nd) and Ben Grasser (44th) with the 3:3 forcing an extra game. Ultimately, a penalty shootout, in which Dominik Stöttner became the match winner, had to decide. Upper Austria won 4:3. Congratulations.
