The Indian Wells Masters 1,000 presented this year the highest financial prize pool in its history: US$19 million (€17.5 million euros) to be distributed among 96 participants.

Opened in 2000 after IMG financed the works, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden has three main stadiums and 26 secondary courts on 100 hectares located in the heart of the California desert. An example of how to energize a desert territory with a tournament that, for many, has become the best tournament on the calendar in its category.

Indian Wells, has its own icon: the president and co-founder of Oracle, Larry Ellison. The tycoon bought the Indian Wells Garden and 50% of the BNP Paribas Open in 2009 for $100 million (€92 million), managing to turn the event around and increase the attendance by 35% since then.

What is expected for this season is to have 450,000 spectators during the 12 days that the tournament lasts. To put it in perspective, it is not far from the 630,000 who attended Roland Garros in 2023, a Grand Slam that lasts longer and that, far from being played in a desert, is held in Paris, one of the most visited cities in the world.

Hence Indian Wells left more than US$565 million (€520 million) of economic impact in the Coachella Valley, three times more than in 2014, according to the BNP Paribas Open Economic Impact Report. The study prepared by George Washington University estimates the direct impact at US$395 million (€363 million), which covers the sum of the tourist spending of the attendees, the investment of the sponsors and the business generated by the establishments and hotels in the area.

The sponsors that allow the prize pool to reach US$20 million are BNP Paribas, which gives its name to the tournament as the main sponsor. Also notable are Fila, Motorola, Pen, BMW, Emirates and PIF, the sovereign fund of Saudi Arabia, which have agreements signed directly with ATP, as well as Hologic, which is a sponsor of the WTA.
