Tomorrow the regional league derby between Vorwärts Steyr and SPG Wallern/St. will take place in the Liwest Arena. Marienkirchen (7 p.m.) – second division football could be played again in the Vorwärtsstadion next season. But not with red and white participation, because: The Upper Austrian third division team is just helping another traditional club out of trouble, Austria Salzburg.
The promotion candidate from the Regionalliga West approached Steyr a few days ago about being allowed to specify the Vorwärtsstadion as an alternative stadium in its application for admission to the second division. The forward bosses gave the green light. “This is only in the event that the renovation of their stadium in Maxglan would not be completed in time for the start of the championship,” reports Rainer Mursch, Steyr’s board member for infrastructure and security.
Both clubs have agreed on a rent. Steyr was something of an absolute emergency plan for Salzburg: they had previously approached Ried, Blau-Weiß Linz and LASK – but did not receive approval due to the short notice.
