With the signing of a new contract, Sebastian Hoeneß’s future has been clarified. He stays at VfB Stuttgart. There will be no possible move to FC Bayern. He explains why.
Coach Sebastian Hoeneß is happy that there is “peace” in the final phase of the season after his contract with VfB Stuttgart was extended. The 41-year-old had repeatedly been considered one of the candidates to succeed Thomas Tuchel at FC Bayern from July 1st.
“If I were really thinking about changing in the summer, I wouldn’t have extended the contract now,” Hoeneß told the streaming service DAZN before the Bundesliga third-placed team’s home game against 1. FC Union Berlin.
“I just have the feeling that we can develop something here,” he explained: “Of course it’s also about the perspective. And I see that as positive.” The extension of his contract until June 30, 2027 was announced by VfB on Friday morning. His original working paper was valid until June 30, 2025.
You have to ask VfB whether there was a certain urge to clarify his future and what role the vacancy at Bayern could play in this. “It was relatively clear to me that if we found a consensus that I would do that,” emphasized Hoeneß. The conversations quickly showed that they were thinking in the same direction. But the coach also said: “I don’t think you can completely separate it all.”
Hoeneß has been training the Stuttgart team since the beginning of April 2023 and shaped the team from almost relegated to Champions League contenders.
