Complainant against Vélez soccer players “wanted to defend himself,” said lawyer

The lawyer of the woman who denounced four soccer players from the Argentine club Vélez Sarsfield for sexual abuse stated in television interviews that the young woman “has signs that she wanted to defend herself.”

Patricia Neme told the C5N and A24 channels that her client, a 24-year-old woman, confirmed her complaint to the court on Thursday and that the case is “in the investigation stage.”

Furthermore, he considered that it was an “aberrant act in a herd” and pointed out that the case, classified as “sexual abuse with carnal access aggravated by the plurality of actors”, provides for a sentence of 20 years in prison.

On Thursday, Vélez had reported in a statement that it would “preventively” separate the four players involved from the squad: the Uruguayan Sebastián Sosa, the Paraguayan José Florentín and the Argentines Braian Cufré and Abiel Osorio.

Hours later, Sosa made a publication on his social networks in which he stated: “I repudiate violence of any kind. I respect the physical and sexual integrity of every person. I trust in the rapid action of Justice.”

Asked about this statement, Neme pointed out that it was Sosa who, in addition to inviting the woman to the hotel in the province of Tucumán (north) where the Vélez team was staying, “continued sending her messages” after the fact.

“He acknowledges that he saw something and tries to justify himself and his friends by saying that they were having a good time,” he noted about the content of the messages.

The lawyer considered the club’s decision to remove the players “correct” and stressed that justice was acting “quickly.”

After the publication of the statement, the vice president of Vélez, Augusto Costa, said that “the most important thing is that this situation is clarified, responsibilities are defined and it is possible to understand what happened.”

“As we have a gender violence protocol that very clearly establishes the steps to follow in these cases, we simply apply that protocol and act accordingly,” he said regarding the decision to separate the footballers.

On Friday morning, without the presence of the four reported players, the Vélez team trained in Ezeiza (southern periphery of Buenos Aires) ahead of next Monday’s game against Banfield.

A similar incident with Vélez players occurred in 2020 when a 28-year-old girl reported having been sexually assaulted at a party where four footballers from that club and a youth coach were present.

Among the accused athletes was the world champion in Qatar 2022 and captain of the under-23 team, Thiago Almada.
