Big winner: Sophie Dirt won four medals.

Austria won the team and target competition at the European Curling Championships in Waldkraiburg. With three gold, three silver and two bronze medals each, the title fights were only slightly more successful for hosts Germany (3/4/1).

Titles for red-white-red went to the men Stefan Gamper, Patrick Solböck, Christian Hobl, Stefan Schwarzl and Martin Laffer in the team competition (11:4 against Germany in the final) and the Lower Austrian Sophie Fehler in the target competition. She was also involved in winning the gold medal in the mixed team, and also won bronze in the team game.

The third gold was prevented by a small mistake in the finish team competition: Dirt crossed the line in the third round. Organizer Germany ultimately had two more points than the Austrians, but Dirt, Julia Omelko, Melissa Mühl and Sarah Speckhard still had silver. “A big thank you goes to my employer. I was able to reduce my hours to 30 in January and February so that I could concentrate fully on preparation,” said the nurse.

Association sports director Klaus Pfleger sees a lot to do for the 2025 World Cup: “In distance sports, we have to work specifically with the athletes, especially in the areas of strength and technique, in order to be able to fight for gold at the World Cup.”
