After Saturday’s cancellation due to wind, flying can now take place. Silje Opseth first lies upside down on her nose – and then sets a valid ski flying world record.
The Norwegians Eirin Maria Kvandal and Silje Opseth recorded a spectacular double success at the first official women’s ski flying World Cup. Kvandal flew 202 and 212 meters in Vikersund and thus secured victory. Her compatriot Opseth set a world record for female ski jumpers with a flight of 230.5 meters.
During the test run, Opseth had already flown 236.5 meters, but then fell headfirst into the snow. With a bloody nose, she managed another – and this time valid – record flight about an hour later. Ema Klinec from Slovenia came third. Last year there was already a ski flying event for women in Vikersund. But this didn’t count for the World Cup.
In the penultimate competition of the World Cup winter, the decisions about the titles in the Raw Air classification and in the overall World Cup were also made. Day winner Kvandal also secured the winner’s check for the Raw Air Tour. For the 19-year-old Nika Prevc from Slovenia, eleventh place was enough to secure her yellow jersey.
Katharina Schmid was once again unable to fulfill her sporting dream. The three-time world champion from Germany wanted to cross the 200 meter mark for the first time in Vikersund, but ended up at 195 meters in the second round. That was enough for fourth place on the day. The competition on Saturday had to be canceled due to wind.
