16,521 runners have already submitted their commitment to the 22nd Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon before the opportunity to register later on the event weekend. For many people, the mileage drops in the final training phase, but the anticipation increases every day. The countdown is running! If you have all your things together, things will definitely be easier on April 7th.
- No experiments: Whether it’s a functional T-shirt, comfortable running trousers and, most importantly, footwear – what you’re going to wear in two weeks should already be decided and then adjusted depending on the prevailing weather conditions. “Under no circumstances should you compete on April 7th with completely new shoes that have not yet been broken in. That can end badly,” says race director Günther Weidlinger. Carbon running shoes, which are currently trendy, may make a small but significant difference for professionals. But the amateur athlete can safely save a few euros. Buying shoes shouldn’t be a rush. “Your foot will fit in many running shoes if the shoe size is right, but will any of these shoes really fit your foot?” says Weidlinger.
- Medium tempo: The training volume should be reduced significantly in the last few weeks before the competition in order to be refreshed and fit at the start. “Now the so-called tapering phase has already begun. The intensity and scope are decreasing significantly,” says Weidlinger. The polarization between longer units at a continuous running pace and short, fast interval training sessions can now be approached more relaxed. Above all, the speed that you want to use in the competition is now the key to getting used to the speed.
- Test a lot: What is on the breakfast plan before the big run on April 7th can now also be tested extensively beforehand. The first meal of the day should be light and not too heavy; it would be best to have breakfast two to three hours before the starting signal. In the last few days you should also ensure that your body is supplied with sufficient fluids. If you are dehydrated at the start, your performance will not be at 100 percent before you start.
