Hort Hrubesch brings back Lina Magull from the German women’s team and nominates a newcomer from Spain. He first has to give up two very important powers.
Without the injured DFB captain Alexandra Popp, the German footballers will go into the European Championship qualifiers in Austria and against Iceland. The 32-year-old striker from VfL Wolfsburg is missing from interim national coach Horst Hrubesch’s squad, as is her club colleague and defense chief Marina Hegering.
Former Munich player Lina Magull from Inter Milan is back in the 23-man squad. Former Frankfurt player Bibiane Schulze Solano from Athletic Bilbao was nominated for the first time ever.
The DFB women will start the elimination for the 2025 European Championships in Switzerland on April 5th (8:30 p.m./ARD) in Linz against Austria and on April 9th (6:10 p.m./ZDF) in Aachen against Iceland. Another group opponent is Poland.
Hrubsch: Players should show themselves
Popp had already missed Wolfsburg’s 4-0 defeat against FC Bayern Munich last Saturday due to knee problems. Hegering tore a muscle fiber in his calf in the top Bundesliga game.
“For us it now means accepting the situation and giving other players the chance to show themselves,” said Hrubsch in a DFB statement. “We want to take the momentum from the successful qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris with us, we want to attack and build on the performance against the Netherlands. I am sure that if we succeed in doing that, we will have a successful start to the European Championship qualification.”
In addition to Magull, Felicitas Rauch (North Carolina Courage/USA), Nicole Anyomi (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Melissa Kössler (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim) were also recently left out, but they are now all back. Newcomer Schulze Solano (25) sees Hrubesch as “an interesting defensive player who has been on our list for a long time.”
Long-time regular player Svenja Huth (Wolfsburg) announced her resignation from the German team last week. The European Championship qualification is also a casting for the Summer Games in Paris: only 18 players are allowed to be nominated there.
