An Independiente glory passed away: Alejandro the “Polish” Semenewicz

Alexander the “Polish” Semenewicz, a glory of Independiente in the 70s, died this morning of a heart attack when he was training the club’s footballers on the Villa Domìnico property.

The 74-year-old former soccer player and multi-champion with the Avellaneda club, was working in the Rojo catchment area and on that day he was carrying out his usual tasks when he suffered a decompensation and was treated by two doctors. Two ambulances later arrived, but they could do nothing to revive him.

“You left us four Libertadores, two Metropolitans, three Inter-American and one Intercontinental. You were part of a glorious decade for the King of Cups and until the last moment you lived by and for Independiente. The red people will be eternally grateful to you. Goodbye Polaco Semenewicz, may you rest in peace”, Independiente published through its social networks.

Semenewicz debuted in Deportivo Morón, where in 1968 he achieved promotion in the club that later retired. There he is well remembered because he was part of the only team that managed to take the club to the highest category.

The winningest Independiente of all time was driven by a midfielder who didn’t stop running: Alejandro Estanislao Semenewicz.

The Polish Semenewic played six years at Independiente and won 10 titles, which were the only ones he won in his career as a footballer.

He would reach the King of Cups in 1970, coming from Deportivo Morón, to win it all. A tireless central midfielder who also occupied several positions on the pitch, between midfield and defense. He debuted in a 3-0 victory for Independiente over Rosario Central.

“El Polaco” achieved a large number of titles: Metro 1970 and 1971, Libertadores 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975, Intercontinental 1973 and Interamericanas 1973, 1974 and 1976.

He was one of the four-time champions of America, an incredible record for Rojo in the 70s. He is also part of the most winning group of players in the top continental competition, all of them being from Independiente: Francisco Sá (6), Elvio Pavoni (5), Ricardo Bochini (4), Miguel Angel Santoro (4), Rubèn Galván (4), Alejandro Semenewicz (4), Miguiel Anfgel López (4), Agustìn Carlos Balbuena (4), Gay (4), Eduardo Commisso (4).

He formed a formidable midfield with Miguel Raimondo and José Omar Pastorizawho also played in the 1972 Argentine National Team.

He wore the Independiente shirt until 1976, playing his last game against Temperley (1-1). He played a total of 266 games, scoring 6 goals..

His last years of career were at Atlético Nacional, Cipolletti, Platense and again Deportivo Morón.

Due to Semenewicz’s injury, the Independiente authorities made the decision to suspend all training sessions that were going to take place on this day in all categories. even from the Primera that played last night against Atlético Tucumán and will do so again on Friday against Banfield.
