FIFA pledges new funds to federations in case of biennial World Cup

In case the world is disputed every two years, instead of every four years as has been the case since 1930 for men and since 1991 for women, a cabinet study Nielsen commissioned by FIFA evaluates the extra income from the tournament to $ 4.4 billion (3.9 billion euros) in four years.

Ticket sales, television rights and sponsorship would increase revenues from the $ 7 billion -a projection linked to the passage of world male from 32 to 48 teams from 2026- a $ 11.4 billion, according to said study.

With the creation of a new “solidarity fund” endowed with $ 3.5 billion (3,100 million euros) for the first four years of the reform, the FIFA estimates to be able to allocate to each federation “about 16 million dollars (14.1 million euros)”, said the governing body of world football on Monday.

This would be added to an increase in the current investment program, dubbed ‘Fifa Forward’, of 6 to 9 million dollars by federation in the same four-year cycle, depending on the organization.

A study commissioned by the UEFA had ensured that a world biennial would decrease the income of the European federations by about 3,000 million euros in four years.

The World Forum of Leagues, which represents about 40 professional championships, estimated for its part that domestic competitions could lose up to $ 8.5 billion ($ 7.5 billion) in revenue per season.

The FIFA did not advance any figures relative to the national championships -which represent the base of the soccer economy-, limiting itself to ensuring that “The historical trajectories do not show any negative correlation between the income generated by the final rounds for national teams and the leagues.”
