Canada’s Margaret McNeill won the World Short Course Championships in Abu Dhabi, setting a new world record in the 50m backstroke. The competition took place on December 20.
The 21-year-old swimmer covered the distance in 25.27 seconds. The previous record belonged to the Dutchwoman Kira Toussaint (25.60).
Canadian Kylie Mass finished second, having swum the distance in 25.62 seconds. The Swedish athlete Louise Hansson closed the top three with a result of 25.86 seconds.
Earlier that day, as part of the competition in Abu Dhabi, the Russian men’s national swimming team shared gold medals with athletes from the United States in the combined 4×50 relay.
Russian and American athletes covered the distance in 1 minute. 30.51 sec. The third place was taken by the Italian team (+0.27 sec.).
A day earlier, Russian Kliment Kolesnikov won two gold medals at the World Cup in Abu Dhabi. Thus, the athlete won a gold medal in short course swimming in the 50 m backstroke and the highest award in the 100 m complex swimming, adds the site “Sport-Express”.
The World Championship runs from December 16 to 21.
