Paris 2024: Sporthilfe is planning 2.1 million euros in bonuses

Achievement should be worth it: the German Olympic and Paralympic participants in Paris receive a not insignificant cash bonus from the German Sport Aid Foundation if they win a medal.

The German Sports Aid Foundation is planning a total of around 2.1 million euros in bonuses for the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in Paris. Sporthilfe announced this exactly 100 days before the start of the Olympics in France’s metropolis on July 26th. These are services that are financed by the foundation exclusively privately and without public funds.

The medal rewards for Paris are broken down as follows: Gold is worth 20,000 euros, silver is worth 15,000 euros and bronze is worth 10,000 euros. In addition, places four to eight are traditionally awarded slightly smaller amounts.

The graduation applies to both Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The greatest success of the starters supported by Sporthilfe is honored. The bonuses for team and relay successes are based on the distribution and are determined separately by the Sporthilfe expert committee.

“Valuing” excellence

“The focus of Sporthilfe funding is on the continuous and holistic support of Germany’s best young and top athletes,” Karin Orgeldinger, who is responsible for athlete funding on the Sporthilfe board, was quoted as saying in a statement.

“It is nevertheless important to us to use the planned Olympic bonuses to honor and, above all, to appreciate the top performances achieved in connection with the long and intensive training as well as the many challenges,” it continues.

Record amount this year

According to its own information, in 2024 Sporthilfe will pay out the highest funding amount in its history to athletes, around 23 million euros. The currently around 360 athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic squads will be supported with around 3.5 million euros during this period.

To date, there have been no medal or victory bonuses from the world associations. However, the World Athletics Association announced last week that it would reward Olympic gold medals in Paris with 50,000 US dollars (46,000 euros) each.

In August, athletics will be the first sport in which prize money will be paid for gold medals, emphasized World Athletics, which plans to pay out a total of 2.4 million US dollars (2.2 million euros) for 48 decisions. In 2028 in Los Angeles there will also be prize money for silver and bronze.
