Tennis: No title hat-trick in Stuttgart – Swiatek out

Tennis player Swiatek had never lost in Stuttgart until this semi-final against Rybakina. The “Iga, Iga” cheers from the Polish fans don’t help either.

World number one Iga Swiatek’s successful streak at the clay court tennis tournament in Stuttgart came to an end in the semi-final against former Wimbledon champion Jelena Rybakina.

After her 2022 and 2023 titles, the Pole was eliminated in a hard-fought match against world number four Kazakhstan 3:6, 6:4, 3:6. Swiatek’s performance in front of 4,200 spectators in the sold-out hall was too flawed for the hoped-for third final in a row in the third participation.

The crowd favorite lost for the first time at the Porsche Grand Prix. Rybakina is now aiming for tournament victory in her first final in Stuttgart on Sunday (1 p.m./DAZN and Eurosport). In the final, the Kazakh will face the Czech Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or the unseeded Ukrainian surprise semi-finalist Marta Kostjuk.

For the three German wildcard holders Angelique Kerber, Laura Siegemund and Tatjana Maria, the tournament was over after the first round.
