Track Cycling World Cup: San Juan lost the organization due to lack of budget

The Cuyo province decided not to organize the event due to economic problems and today the International Cycling Union (UCI) confirmed the trans-Andean country as the new venue for the event that will take place between October 15 and 19 of next year.

The 2025 Track Cycling World Championships will be held in Santiago, Chile and not in San Juan, as previously announced. The International Cycling Union (UCI) reported today.

Argentina had been selected to host in 2022, but Chile will now host the competition for the first time at the Peñalolén Velodrome from October 15 to 19, 2025.

It will be the first time South America has hosted the competition since Colombia in 2014. This year’s championship will take place in Denmark in October, while the 2026 event will be held in China.

The world championships are held every year for the different disciplines and distances of track cycling. Runners compete representing their country.

Argentina had been designated in mid-2022 to organize the World Cup, but in the end it will not be the venue due to economic problems and lack of budget, mainly due to the cuts ordered by the national government to the provinces. The competitions of the oldest cycling event were going to be historic for the country since San Juan expected to receive more than 400 athletes representing 45 countries.

In addition, the World Cup was scheduled to be held in the new Vicente Alejo Chancay velodrome, which was inaugurated last year.

The Pan American Games of Chile 2023 demonstrated that the trans-Andean country is in a position to manage and organize different first-class international sports competitions and part of its legacy will be reused for the 2025 Track World Cup.
