French anti-terrorism authorities arrested a 16-year-old boy after he said on social media that he wanted to die as a martyr at the Paris Olympics.a spokesperson said on Wednesday, confirming an earlier report by BFMtv.
“He was arrested after he publicly announced on social media that he planned to create an explosive belt to become a martyr”he said, adding that it was being investigated whether he had true intentions to commit a terrorist act.
Conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraineas well as the threat of attacks by Islamist militants, have led France, which will host the Olympic Games this summer, to raise its security alert to the highest level.
The French government has asked about 45 foreign countries to provide several thousand additional military, police and civilian personnel to help safeguard the Paris Olympics, sources told Reuters last month.
