Olympic champion in ice dancing Natalya Bestemyanova named figure skater Kamila Valieva the favorite of the Russian Championship in women’s single skating.
In an interview with Lenta.Ru on Thursday, December 23, Bestemyanova explained that Valieva currently has “the most balanced skating, the highest level of performance of elements and ligaments.” Separately, she noted the stable performance of jumps in the most difficult ultra-si category.
Assessing the prospects of Alena Kostornaya, who will miss the Chechen Republic due to an injury, Bestemyanova said that the current season is actually over for her, and the figure skater could claim fifth place at the Russian Championship.
The Russian Figure Skating Championship will be held from 23 to 26 December in St. Petersburg. Based on its results, the athletes who will represent Russia at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing will be determined.
On November 27, Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva won the final stage of the Grand Prix in Sochi. According to the results of the free program, student Eteri Tutberidze scored 185.29 points, in total for two programs – 272.71 points.
At the same time, the athlete set world records in the free program and in the sum of the two programs, improving her achievements.
